Hiking in Bohinj: where to park and how to reach the trailheads

Many popular hiking trailheads in Bohinj can be reached without driving all the way to the starting point. Leave your car at one of the more affordable car parks in Bohinjska Bistrica, Nomenj or Srednja vas and continue your journey by organised transfer, regular bus service or train.

We have gathered some practical information to help you plan your journey.

Which trailheads can you reach by organised transfer or regular bus service?

Organised transfers in Bohinj and regular bus services can take you towards:

the Vogar–Blato crossroad – the starting point for Vogar, Planina pri Jezeru, the Fužina mountain pastures and the Triglav Lakes Valley;
Pokljuka – for Viševnik, Lipanca, Debela peč and hikes towards Triglav;
Uskovnica – for Konjščica and Vodnikov dom mountain hut;
Soriška planina – for Možic, Slatnik, Lajnar and Ratitovec;
Ukanc and Savica Waterfall – starting points for Komna and the Triglav Lakes Valley.

Organised transfers in Bohinj include seasonal lines organised by the Municipality of Bohinj and Tourism Bohinj. Some connections to trailheads are also operated as regular public bus services.

Organised transfers and regular bus services are not the same

When planning your journey, check whether the connection is an organised transfer in Bohinj or a regular public bus service.
The line to Savica Waterfall and the weekend line to Soriška planina are regular Arriva bus services. The Bohinj 24h ticket is not valid on these lines, and the journey must be paid for according to the operator’s current fare schedule.
While line 7 is operating, you can also travel to Soriška planina using the organised on-demand transfer, which must be booked through the ToyotaGo app.

Bohinj 24h ticket

The Bohinj 24h ticket costs €2 and includes:

unlimited use of organised transfers in Bohinj;
transfers between organised lines;
use for 24 hours from the ticket’s first activation.

Purchase your ticket before travelling:

on promet.bohinj.si;
from ticket machines;
at selected sales points.

Tickets cannot be purchased on the bus.

The Bohinj 24h ticket is not valid on regular Arriva bus services or on trains.

ToyotaGo on-demand transfers

Advance booking through the ToyotaGo app is required for the following organised transfers:

line 7: Bohinjska Bistrica–Soriška planina;
line 8: Srednja vas–Uskovnica.

Transport is not guaranteed without an advance booking. Before travelling, also check the deadline by which the booking must be made.

Connections with trains and regular bus services

On some connections, the organised transfer timetables are partly coordinated with:

train arrivals and departures at Bohinjska Bistrica railway station;
regular bus services;
other organised lines in Bohinj.

Always check the entire journey, the time available for transfers and the last connection for your return. We recommend allowing some extra time when changing services, as a delay to one service does not guarantee that the next connection will wait.

When are the transfers busiest?

During the summer, services between 9.00 and 10.30 are often the busiest. For longer hikes, we recommend setting off earlier.
The early line 5 departure at 5.30 from Srednja vas – Senožeta is generally less busy and is a good option for starting a hike from the Vogar–Blato crossroad in good time.
The number of seats is limited. Once a vehicle is full, it cannot accept additional passengers at intermediate stops, and you will need to wait for the next service. A seat cannot be guaranteed in advance, even on early departures, unless booking is available for that particular line.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I buy a Bohinj 24h ticket on the bus?

No. You must purchase the Bohinj 24h ticket before boarding, either on promet.bohinj.si, from a ticket machine or at a selected sales point.
The ticketing conditions and purchase options of the regular transport operator apply on Arriva services.

Is the Bohinj 24h ticket valid to Savica Waterfall?

No. The line to Savica Waterfall is a regular Arriva bus service. The journey must be paid for according to the operator’s fare schedule.

Is the Bohinj 24h ticket valid on trains?

No. The ticket is valid only on organised transfers in Bohinj. You need a separate Slovenian Railways ticket for train journeys unless you have a valid Julian Alps: Bohinj Card that includes train travel.

What happens if the bus is full?

A full vehicle cannot accept additional passengers at intermediate stops. You will need to wait for the next departure or find an alternative connection.
We therefore recommend travelling earlier, particularly when planning a longer hike and during the busiest periods of the summer season.

Are organised transfers intended for groups?

Organised transfers are intended for individual passengers and are not designed for organised groups.
An organised group is defined as more than 6 people travelling together on lines 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8; more than 8 people travelling together on lines 1, 2 and 3.
Larger groups should arrange private transport with a local transport provider in advance.

Can I take a dog on the bus?

Dogs are permitted on organised transfers under certain conditions:

the dog must be kept on a lead and wear a muzzle;
it must be clean and dry;
it must lie on the floor during the journey;
smaller animals must be transported in a suitable cage or carrier;
passengers travelling with animals are generally seated in the rear section of the vehicle.
The driver may refuse to transport an animal if it could pose a safety risk or disturb other passengers.

Different operators’ rules apply on regular bus services. As a rule, animals are not permitted unless a specific exception applies.

Where do I change buses in Ribčev Laz?

Some connections require a change at the temporary bus stop in front of the entrance to Hotel Jezero, next to the terrace.
